SYLVANIA TOWNSHIP, Ohio — The Sylvania Township police chief has announced his retirement.
Paul Long, who was appointed STPD chief in 2018 and previously served 33 years in the Toledo Police Department, will retire on April 1, 2024, according to a press release.
When giving his notice of resignation to the township board of trustees, he also recommended assistant Lt. Sarah Toth be appointed to fill his position.
Long's time in Sylvania Township almost didn't happen, though.
"I was planning to retire and my wife Lori saw the posting for the chief's job, which has turned out to be a wonderful experience," Long said in the press release.
Long was previously commander of TPD's Scott Park District Station and was president of his police academy class in 1985.
Sylvania Twp. Trustee Chairman Neal Mahoney said Long "is a great man and has been an excellent chief."
"Because of the many officer retirements, (Long) has had to replace nearly half of the department," Mahoney said in the press release. "Under his leadership, he was able to successfully do that while creating a positive culture that integrated the new hires with the established officers. He will truly be missed."
