Overnight fire in Point Place displaces couple and over a dozen animals

The homeowners say the fire started in the attic.

TOLEDO, Ohio — A family in Point Place is scrambling on Saturday after an electrical fire damaged their home overnight.

The fire happened on the 3200 block of 138th street  just off of Edgewater Dr. around 4 a.m. and caused significant damage to the inside of the home.

The couple who lives in the home says the child of a family friend was staying with them at the time of the fire.

The couple also had numerous rescue animals including 12 dogs, 6 cats, and fish.

Nobody was seriously hurt in the fire, but the family says their insurance adjuster can't survey the damage until Tuesday.

That means the couple and the animals they were taking care of are breaking in the new year homeless.

Homeowner David Baker is shocked by what happened but is thankful no one was hurt.

“We’ve never been here before. We don’t know what to do. All we do know is to rebuild and move on from here,” said Baker. “Everything’s replaceable. Everyone made it out fine and that’s what we’re grateful for”

According to the homeowners, the fire started in the attic. Although their smoke alarms were working, there was no smoke in the living area of the home. Rather, they were alerted to the fire when power went out in the home and they smelled something coming from the closet.
