Tiffin City Council approves outdoor refreshment area

The new DORA expires in December when the city council will readdress the ordinance.

TIFFIN, Ohio — The City of Tiffin will soon be hosting the newest designated outdoor refreshment area in Ohio.

It was the city of Tiffin's third attempt at a downtown outdoor refreshment area, but council unanimously approved the measure Monday night.

Tiffin Mayor Aaron Montz says the new DORA is a necessity at this point to help drum up additional business for downtown restaurants impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.

Last month, the city set out dining areas for these businesses and now they will be able to serve alcohol outdoors as well.

"Many of them, of course in the downtown buildings, don't have the space of a new build type construction unit. So, we placed seating all over the downtown," Montz said.

This DORA in Tiffin is not permanent just yet. It is only permitted to operate until the end of December. Then, city council will have to readdress the issue to see if they want a DORA to become an integral fixture to their downtown.

"By establishing this temporary DORA, we are able to prove to the community and those on council who are skeptical of the idea that it really will go on without issue and will only benefit our local restaurants and bars," Montz said.

The goal is to have this new Tiffin DORA up and running by July 1.
