Toledo firefighter on paid administrative leave during investigation, Toledo fire officials confirm

A spokesperson for Toledo Fire and Rescue said they could not divulge the details of the investigation due to its ongoing nature.

TOLEDO, Ohio — Toledo Fire and Rescue confirmed Tuesday that a Toledo firefighter has been placed on paid administrative leave during the course of an investigation.

The department is conducting an internal investigation involving Matthew Riggle, who is both a firefighter and paramedic. Riggle has been on paid leave since Sept. 26.

In accordance with department policy, a spokesperson told WTOL 11 that Toledo Fire and Rescue would release no information related to the investigation until it is complete.

WTOL 11 requested Riggle's personnel file. According to the file, Riggle was hired by the department in 2016. He received two written commendations in 2018 and 2019 from the fire chief and acting fire chief, respectively, for providing life-saving measures during emergency response incidents. He also received a written reprimand twice, once in 2022 and once in 2023, for failing to notify that he would not be attending a paramedic class.
