Crews respond to fire at downtown Toledo building Thursday

The fire started on the third floor of the building above an event center Thursday afternoon, according to the owner of The Blarney. Everyone was safely evacuated.

TOLEDO, Ohio — Toledo Fire & Rescue Department crews responded to a fire above a downtown Toledo business shortly after 3:30 p.m. Thursday on a call of smoke showing from the building in the 600 block of Monroe Street.

The fire started on the third floor of the building in a space that appeared to be used for storage and was contained to the area, according to TFRD Asst. Fire Chief John Kaminski. The fire did not extend into The Blarney Irish Pub or its event space located on the first floor of the building.

The Blarney Irish Pub was evacuated due to the fire. The Blarney's owner, Ed Beczynski, said everyone was able to leave safely. The restaurant has since reopened.

No injuries to firefighters were reported, Kaminski said. The fire is under investigation and the extent of the damage to the third floor is currently not known.
