TOLEDO, Ohio — Discrimination claims are coming from another Toledo Fire recruit and he has filed charges with the Ohio Civil Rights Commission.
"We know for a fact that racism is occurring on a daily basis at the Academy and it needs to stop," said Earl Murry.
Murry, was speaking on behalf of Toledo Fire recruit, Randall Fuller, at One Government Center on Wednesday.
Fuller claims he was discriminated against based on his race and disability. He said he wasn't graded fairly in tests and wasn't made aware of any performance issues before getting fired.
Discrimination charges have been filed with the Ohio Civil Rights Commission, which supports his claims.
Murry said of the last three fire recruit classes, all but one of the people terminated from the department were African American.
"All inquiries regarding the Ohio Civil Rights Commission determination or any pending litigation will need to be directed to the city law department," Private Sterling Rahe from the Toledo Fire department said.
A spokesperson for the City of Toledo said at this time, they do not have a comment.
According to Murry, he would be happy to meet with Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz to offer suggestions and recommendations on how race relations can be improved.
"It will include the termination of individuals who are employed at the Fire Department who practice perpetuity of racism on a daily basis against African Americans, which I told him about on May 31st 2018," Murry said.
Murray said he plans to release more detailed information in July after they get records that have been requested.
