Pedestrian killed walking alongside road in Erie Township

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office said alcohol nor speed are factors in the crash.

MONROE COUNTY, Mich. —  A pedestrian was killed after being struck by an SUV in Erie Township.

The crash occurred Wednesday around 7:45 p.m. on Sterns Road, west of South Dixie Highway.  

According to a press release, Brian Goldberg, 35, of Toledo, was driving an SUV eastbound on Sterns Road with two juvenile passengers, one in the front seat and one in a rear seat.

Goldberg struck Jacob Calleja, 42, of East Tawas, MI, who was wearing dark clothing while walking on the edge of the asphalt roadway, near the fog-line.

When first responders arrived, Calleja was found in a nearby ditch and taken to a hospital where he died from his injuries. 

Goldberg and both juvenile passengers were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash and were not injured. Airbags in the SUV did not deploy.

Alcohol nor speed are factors in the crash, the press release stated.

The crash remains under investigation by the Monroe County Sheriff's Office Traffic Services Division.
