OREGON, Ohio — Protesters rallied around a Toledo man shot by Oregon Police officers two weeks ago at the Oregon Police station on Saturday afternoon..
Victor Dale Junior is still recovering from two gunshot wounds after police shot at his vehicle 21 times as he was trying to leave the scene of an alleged domestic situation.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is investigating the officers' actions and use of force. But protesters believe there should be consequences.
"Those police officers should not be police officers any more period," said Julian Mack, spokesperson for the Community Solidarity Response Network of Toledo,
Mack said Dale is calling for accountability in the form of three actions, including firing the officers involved.
"The second is officers are charged as if any of us were to do the same thing and shoot 21 times in an apartment complex," said Mack. "And three, that whoever is responsible for those officers being on the street, they are held accountable as well."
Dale told everyone he never thought this could happen to him. He believes the officers were reckless and they should be treated the same as anyone else.
"The fact that my daughter could've been in the car, in the building or anything else that hurts," said Mack. "So when we have officers that are disregarding protocol and going around like this is a movie or video game, firing off shots, chasing vehicles through parking lots, something needs to change."
Oregon Police chief Mike Navarre has promised the family a full and thorough investigation. He had no further comment on Dale's demands.
Dale said the requests aren't just for him but to set a precedent for the future.
"If you're going to refuse to do the right things," he said, "we're going to refuse to give peace until we get justice."
