TOLEDO, Ohio — Toledo Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz will meet officials from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development next week to discuss problematic rental properties in the city, notably the Ashland Manor apartment complex.

"Mayor Kapszukiewicz will highlight concerns with various residential properties owned by out-of-town landlords who receive funding from HUD and fail to keep properties up to appropriate standards," a press release from the city said.

"The City of Toledo Code Compliance and Housing teams are committed to taking proactive measures to address issues related to housing conditions, working collaboratively with property owners on a case-by-case basis. Engaging property owners directly is considered the most effective approach to resolving concerns and maintaining the highest standards for residential properties."

Kapszukiewicz will urge HUD officials to ensure landlords are actually maintaining their properties, according to the city.

"The outcome of this meeting is expected to bring about positive changes and improvements in the living conditions of residents in properties receiving HUD funding," the city said.

The Ashland Manor property was given an order Tuesday by the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department to fix a variety of public health issues present at the building by Friday or face potential legal action.

The mayor's meeting with HUD will happen Thursday, Jan. 18, at 3 p.m. in Washington D.C.

WTOL 11 reached out to HUD and NB Affordable, the owners of Ashland Manor, for comment on the property's condition and the city's order but have not yet heard back.
