Toledo mayor, police chief says the city will only buy weapons, ammunition from “responsible” companies in the wake of the country’s latest mass shooting

In the wake of the mass shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, Toledo city officials are holding a news conference to unveil a new initiative regarding weapons and ammunition purchased by the city.

TOLEDO (WTOL) - In the wake of the country’s latest mass shooting, Toledo city officials held a news conference to unveil a new initiative regarding weapons and ammunition purchased by the city.

Toledo mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz and Police Chief George Kral said the city and police department will only buy weapons and ammunition from companies that city leaders deem responsible.

Mayor Kapszukiewicz says "enough” to hate and violence in our country after 11 people were killed and 6 more were injured at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh on Saturday.

He believes it is too easy for a mentally ill or unstable person to obtain assault weapons. Now, the mayor says he will use the $150,000 the city spends annually on gun contracts to push for change on a local level.

Mayor Kapszukiewicz says this isn’t another law on the books, but rather use of the free market to influence change.

Companies signing a contract with the city of Toledo will have to answer six questions dealing with how and to whom they sell weapons. If companies can’t answer appropriately, city leaders say they are prepared to take their business elsewhere.
