How Toledo's first responders keep one another safe

When a crew from the Toledo fire department needed assistance at a scene last week, Toledo police officers were quick to respond.

TOLEDO, Ohio —

We often call on the Toledo Police Department or Toledo Fire & Rescue Department when we need assistance. But what happens when first responders need each other?

When TFRD medics responded to a medical call at a north Toledo apartment complex last Thursday, a sergeant on scene told WTOL 11 that a large crowd surrounded the medics and interfered as they tried to assist a patient.

"Anytime we approach a scene for any type of incident, we are very vigilant and mindful of our situation and we like to exercise situational awareness," said Pvt. Jamar Winston, TFRD spokesperson.

Crews called on police for backup. When officers arrived, they arrested three people.

Winston says TFRD doesn't have to call on TPD often. But when they do, it's because the department's own de-escalation techniques didn't work.

"If that individual or individuals are unable to accommodate those de-escalation tactics that we're trying to employ, then obviously, we've got to call on our brothers and sisters in arms," he said.

Lt. Paul Davis, TPD spokesperson. says police can secure a scene and control crowds if TFRD calls for help.

"When they're there, they are trying to focus on whatever medical emergency is going on and it's very difficult for them if they have outside influences coming in and yelling at them," Davis said.

The partnership goes both ways, too. According to Davis, firefighters and medics are quick to respond if called upon by officers.

"If we get injured out on the street, which happens occasionally, they're going to be who we call to come and provide aid to us, so it's very important that we maintain that good relationship," Davis said.
