TOLEDO, Ohio — The Toledo Public Schools Board of Education on Tuesday unanimously approved a 3.8-mill levy for the November ballot.
The money from the levy would be used to cover district operating costs.
"You can imagine after 10-something years, not getting new money, inflation has truly caught up to us," said TPS Superintendent Romules Durant.
The board also approved the issuance of $99 million in bonds, which would be used to maintain and upkeep district buildings.
"We made a promise that we would not come to them until 10 years and here we are now because we want to continue the work that we're doing in our district," said Board President Randall Parker III.
Durant said some of the money from the levy will also go toward revitalizing the Scott Park Campus. Last year, the district purchased the property on Nebraska Avenue.
"We're talking about the educational opportunities, we want to bring athletic opportunities, just as much as providing residential (opportunities)," Durant said. "We want to be able to have teachers, police officers, professors, firefighters, to live on the same very campus they work at."
What will the levy cost taxpayers?
For a home valued at $100,000, it would cost a homeowner about $200 per year, according to TPS. This would give the district $10,000,000 a year.
Parker said he hopes to have support from taxpayers.
"I would ask that the community trust us to believe that we will do what's right with what is presented to us, for the betterment of our students," he said.
If the levy fails, the district will look into another potential levy in the spring of 2025.
