Toledo Public Schools shows off high-flying program at aviation expo

The expo, took place at the Eugene F. Kranz Toledo Express Airport in Swanton, where kids with high flying futures learn the ins and outs of aviation.

SWANTON, Ohio — Toledo Public Schools held an open house event at the Eugene F. Kranz Toledo Express Airport on Saturday.

But it wasn't a typical open house, this one took place on the ground and in the air. TPS's Aerospace and Natural Science Academy was showing the public and potential students what they are learning and doing.

"My entire life I've always been interested in aviation and I've always wanted to be a mechanic, always wanted to be a pilot," said Quinn Hanifan, a current student in the program.

Hanifan is a student pilot at the Academy.

His inspiration comes from his grandpa who was a local pilot.

"Since I was little, he'd always tell me stories about flying and that's kind of what got me into it," said Hanifan.

Hanifan says he's grateful to be getting a head start in his dream career while still in high school, especially since the average tuition for aircraft mechanics education costs upwards of $65 thousand.

"It's really a gift to have this program and I can't wait to see it grow and more students attend and just, you know, have a good career with it," said Hanifan.

Saturday's expo, gave kids the chance to take flight, either by flying in a plane for free through the Young Eagle Organization or flying in a helicopter for a small fee.

The expo already had future students excited for the opportunity to learn all about flying and aircraft mechanics.

"I think it's going to be great. Hopefully, I can finish school and get through all of it, but other than that, I really think it's going to be fun," said Malijah Dueserberry future student.

The program is unique because it's the only school in northwest Ohio for high schoolers with an aviation program and they say it's a great opportunity for young people who want a head start on an exciting career.

"There's such a high need for people in the aviation industry that we're able to provide that for the industry. We don't have enough students to fill the number of jobs available in the industry. We want people. That's why we do these events", said Kurt Wicklund, Senior Director for ANSAT.

Hanifan is happy to be another step closer to his dream by attending this unique school.

"This is a great program. If you're dedicated, if you're passionate about aviation in general, if you like to work hard and learn new things, this is an amazing place to be," said Hanifan.
