TOLEDO, Ohio — Toledo-based radio DJ Charles Welch, has died. Welch, who also went by the the name 'Charlie Chuck', was the founder of Toledo's radio station WJUC 'The Juice'.
Welch was the first African American to operate his own radio station in Northwest Ohio.
In a Facebook post, a family member announced the death of Welch.
"It is with great sadness that we must announce the passing of the patriarch of Toledo’s Welch family. W. Charles Welch, aka ‘Charlie Chuck’ has gracefully transitioned from the earthly realm and is now resting amongst in the heavens.
Through his broadcasting and business accomplishments Mr. Welch has left his mark on Toledo history. However, it was his dedication to all of the people in Toledo who had no voice that shall be remembered above all.
His beloved family thanks all of you in advance for your prayers, kind words, and privacy at this time."
Funeral arrangements will be announced at a later date.
Welch's cause of death has not been released by his family.
