TOLEDO, Ohio — The city of Toledo has announced its Clean Toledo events and refuse and recycling opportunities for 2024.
Residents will have a chance to take advantage of several free opportunities to properly dispose of or recycle items that may not be accepted during regular pickup.
In addition to thirteen free drop-off events, there is a new Block-by-Block initiative to reduce blight in Toledo.
The city is also piloting a free residential food waste composting program with drop-off bins at three of Toledo's metroparks.
According to Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz, the city of Toledo Department of Public Service collected the following during 2023:
- 25,438 tires collected and recycled
- 22,859 gallons of paint recycled
- 57.63 tons of scrap metal recycled
- 72.15 tons of electronic waste recycled
- 758.2 tons of general debris disposed
- 63.97 tons of household hazardous waste recycled
- 25,600 cubic feet of Styrofoam recycled
- 68,996 pounds of secured documents shredded and recycled
- 774 yards of green waste recycled and diverted from our landfill
ACCEPTABLE ITEMS
A variety of items will be collected for appropriate and safe disposal during the Clean Toledo events.
Items that will be accepted for disposal or recycling include:
- 10 tires for $.50 each (on or off the rim, no commercial tires allowed)
- Bulky items and refuse (including air conditioning units, refrigerators/freezers and large appliances)
- Cardboard, phone books and newspapers
- Clothing and household goods
- Document shredding and recycling
- Electronic waste (including televisions and CRT monitors)
- Household hazardous waste
- Latex or oil-based paint and stains
- Packing Styrofoam (no plates, cups or other food-grade containers)
- Residential yard waste (including sticks, branches, leaves and grass clippings)
- Scrap metal
- Medical equipment (April 20, Aug. 24 and Oct. 5 only)
CLEAN TOLEDO SCHEDULE OF EVENTS
Clean Toledo drop-off events will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Volunteers will direct participants at each site:
There are currently no further drop-off events scheduled for 2024.

BLOCK-BY-BLOCK SCHEDULE
New this year, the city of Toledo's Division of Urban Beautification will be canvassing neighborhoods for free curbside bulk pickup every two weeks through Oct. 19.
Furniture, mattresses, televisions, computers, scrap wood and yard waste can be placed by the curb for free collection during the Block-by-Block schedule.
Unlike the thirteen Clean Toledo events, Block-by-Block pick-up will not be equipped to collect household hazardous waste. Residents are encouraged to take those items to the Clean Toledo events instead.

If crews are unable to finish during the scheduled Block-by-Block pickup day, items should be left at the curb for collection the following Monday morning.

FREE DISPOSAL DAYS, BULK PICKUP AND FOOD COMPOSTING
Other options are also available for Toledo residents to recycle or dispose of bulky items and a new pilot program is available to reduce food waste.
Free Disposal Days
Toledo residents can bring a truck or trailer-load of bulky solid waste items including trash, furniture, carpeting, mattresses, wood waste and scrap metal to the Hoffman Road Landfill for free disposal on the following dates:
- Nov. 30

The Hoffman Road Landfill is located at 3962 Hoffman Road and is open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Residents must enter from Manhattan Boulevard and there is no entry from Matzinger/Schwartz roads.
Residents must have a valid driver's license for proof of residency. You are required to unload your items yourself and no assistance will be provided. Yard waste, chemicals, paint, asbestos and items containing freon will not be accepted.
Free bulk pickup
Residents can also schedule one free bulk trash pickup per month through Republic Services by calling 419-936-2511.
All loose waste must be bagged, wood and branches must be tied into bundles no larger than 3-foot by 4-foot and under 40 pounds each, and nails and screws must be pounded down or removed prior to pickup.
Free food composting
A pilot program for residential food composting is available at three local parks.
Residents can dispose of household food waste for free at the following locations in green totes during metropark hours from 7 a.m. to dark:
- Glass City Metropark, 901 Front St. at the back left corner of the lot
- Toledo Botanical Garden, 5430 W. Bancroft St. at the southeast corner of the lot
- Swan Creek Metropark, 4301 Airport Highway at the northeast corner of the lot
