Toledo e-scooters are here to stay. Some city leaders aren't for it

Toledo City Council two weeks ago voted in favor of a one-year contract with Veo, owner of the e-scooters.

TOLEDO, Ohio — Veo e-scooters can be an easy way to get around downtown and other parts of Toledo.

"I guess download, go and ride," downtown Toledo resident Jordan Todd said of the scooters.

Todd has never ridden a Veo scooter, but he's seen them, sometimes in places they shouldn't be and blocking sidelines or lying on the grass.

"Not in a metered area," he said. "They don't have set areas to be placed."

Toledo City Council member John Hobbs III said he likes the idea of scooters in Toledo, but he wants to see them more organized in the city.

"Someone that is riding or running or walking or whatever they're trying to do, persons with disabilities, are able to not have their movement hampered by this Veo not being used," he said.

Hobbs was one of four council members who voted against the city entering into a one-year contract with Veo two weeks ago.

"I was shocked that my colleagues voted against it," said council member Nick Komives, chair of the mobility, sustainability and beautification committee that introduced the contract,

Komives said transportation like the Veo scooters is important in Toledo.

"More than 230,000 rides were taken just last year, which was an increase from the year before," he said. "We know that people use them for all types of purposes. I was surprised to see that people wanted to take them away. It seems like they're well-liked in the community."

In a statement to WTOL 11, Veo responded to scooters being left around:

"Veo strives to be a good neighbor, and our staff of in-house fleet technicians are in the field every day swapping out e-scooter batteries and ensuring our vehicles are parked properly in the community."

Todd said he still has various questions about the scooters.

"We are not too sure of what's going on, who picks them up, or are you to put them back somewhere?" he said.

Veo asks that anyone who sees a scooter in a place it shouldn't be contact the company at 855-836-2256 or hello@veoride.com, provide the location of the scooter and, if possible, the scooter's vehicle number,
