TOLEDO, Ohio — A lot of our lives have gone virtual because of the coronavirus pandemic. From school to work, and even interacting with friends. Getting online is also helping a Toledo woman take the next step in her life.
With her right hand raised, Devyn Hamen was sworn into the Air Force from her dining room. It’s not how she pictured this moment but it’s still a dream come true.
“The base was shut down, so I had to swear in online. That was a disappointment at first because you wait too long for something and it’s taken away," Hamen said.
Regardless of where she swore in, the meaning and impact of this achievement in her life remained intact.
“It means everything to be able to do what I did. I’ve waited my whole life for this. I’m just excited for my next chapter to start," Hamen said.
Devyn continues the long line of family who has served in the military.
“We have a long line of family who has been in the military. My uncle is active duty. He’s currently serving 20 years. Both of my grandfathers were in the air force and my great grandfather was a Colonel in the Navy," Hamen said.
She said she is still waiting for a set date to leave for basic training, but whenever that day comes, she’ll be ready.
