Police identify driver in deadly hit and run bicycle crash in west Toledo

Following the collision, another driver passing by spotted the injured man in the road and called emergency services.

TOLEDO, Ohio — Toledo police are looking for the driver they say hit and killed a person riding a bicycle in west Toledo before leaving the scene.

The incident happened just before 2:45 a.m. on July 30 on East Alexis Road near Telegraph.

Police told WTOL 11 the vehicle that hit the 30-year-old man left debris in the roadway, identifying it as a white Dodge pickup truck.

According to a police report, the driver of the truck hit the rear of the bicycle then drove "several yards down the street" with the bicyclist "lodged underneath".

Another driver passing by struck the edge of the mangled bike while attempting to swerve around the debris. They spotted the injured man laying in the curb lane and called emergency services.

The bicyclist was taken to the hospital where he later died from his injuries.

Following the collision, another driver passing by spotted the injured man in the road and called emergency services.

On Saturday, police identified the driver of the white pickup truck as 55-year-old Kenneth Pegler from Temperance, Michigan.

According to a Toledo police statement on a Toledo Municipal Court warrant, Pegler contacted a friend on the day after the incident, having seen a story about the deadly crash on the news.

According to the warrant, Pegler has still not contacted the police as of Aug. 3.

A different warrant goes into detail about Pegler’s whereabouts on the evening before the crash. According to the Toledo Municipal Court document, Pegler was seen by witnesses and captured on video drinking at at least three west Toledo bars on the night of the crash.

Video evidence from the final bar Pegler was seen at, the Peppermint Hippo on West Alexis Road, which he left just minutes before the crash, showed Pegler drinking at least 2 beers and 5 shots between midnight and 2:40 a.m.

Furthermore, video evidence shows Pegler unable to park in marked lanes, stumbling as he left the bar, and falling out of his seat as he attempted to get in his truck, according to police.

WTOL 11 reached out to the Peppermint Hippo who declined to leave a comment.

Pegler has warrants for Aggravated Vehicular Homicide and Failing to Stop at the Scene of an Accident.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to call or text Crime Stoppers at 419-255-1111. You can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward.
