FOSTORIA, Ohio — A train headed for Sunny Farms Landfill derailed on Tuesday due to a broken CSX transportation rail, according to Sunny Farms Landfill officials.
Officials with the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said there were two railcars that derailed. Both were filled with garbage.
The cars were later re-railed. One of the railcars remained in the railyard Thursday morning.
Images posted on social media of the railcars looked as though there were no covers on the cars.
EPA staff responded to the derailment and found there was no waste spilled.
They also said there was black mesh on the cars which is a typical method for containing materials inside rail cars.
EPA officials said these mesh covers might not be visible from a distance or in photos.
Sunny Farm Landfill officials provided a statement on the derailment to WTOL 11:
"We have confirmed that, due to a broken rail, two cars on their way to Sunny Farms Landfill derailed. Because we require strong netting on all our rail cars, no waste was spilled from either car. Sunny Farms will continue to mandate and adhere to strict safety precautions so that even when there is a derailment, a spill can be avoided, as it was today."
WTOL 11 reached out to CSX for comment on the derailment on Wednesday and Thursday but did not hear back.
