Area trash collection contractors merge, citing impacts of pandemic

As of Nov. 25, Steven's Disposal entered a merger with Select Sanitation, which collects garbage for parts of Lucas, Fulton and Henry counties.

LUCAS COUNTY, Ohio — Steven's Disposal is a private garbage collection company located in Petersburg, Mich., that services more than 150,000 residential customers.

"We have a large footprint. We operate on average about 130 trucks a day," said company spokesperson Kevin Shipman.

And that footprint just got larger, because as of Nov. 25, Steven's Disposal entered a merger with Select Sanitation, which collects garbage for parts of Lucas, Fulton and Henry counties, adding another 3,000 residential customers into the fold.

"You'll find in communities that a lot of privately-owned companies help each other out when somebody has some equipment troubles, they borrow, and they sell equipment to each other," Shipman said. "We have had that relationship with Select for many years."

Select Sanitation is getting candid with their troubles citing post-pandemic changes as the reason to join forces.

The company released the following statement:

We are very excited to be doing this merger with Steven’s Disposal. They have become friends and mentors. Brian will still be running our routes. Prices will remain the same, as will most everything else. The biggest changes are that the office will be moved to Steven’s and that we will not be picking up on holidays. It will be pushed back a day! This merger will help us to have our home be just a home again and for me to be able to focus on our family. We have loved doing this for all these years. This merger is just going to help us be able to have a little more down time! Please be patient as we transition things."

Steven's garbage cans will be provided at a later date. Beginning Dec. 4, all of the Select employees and customers will report to Steven's disposal yard. For now, customers are encouraged to update their payment arrangements.

"Obviously down the road, there may be some changes to how we collect the trash as far as containers and things like that," Shipman said. "Eventually, everything will be under the Steven's name."
