TPD: Truck driver smashes through utility pole in west Toledo leaving debris, downed wires early Thursday

A man inside the truck claimed someone else was driving the vehicle when it crashed, according to Toledo police at the scene.

TOLEDO, Ohio — Toledo police are investigating after a pickup truck driver smashed into a utility pole in west Toledo early Thursday morning.

The crash happened just after 2 a.m. on West Sylvania Avenue near Lewis Avenue.

Officers at the scene told WTOL 11 the pickup truck knocked the pole down at its base and ended up in the parking lot of the former Rudy's Hot Dog restaurant. The impact was significant enough to leave debris and downed wires scattering the road.

According to a Toledo police report, the vehicle also struck an unoccupied vehicle.

One male from the truck claimed someone else was driving the vehicle at the time of the impact.

As the person was leaving the vehicle, his left foot got stuck under the front passenger tire, police said in a report. Toledo Fire and Rescue crews jacked the truck up to free him. Police said the person refused medical treatment.

Toledo Edison crews arrived immediately at the scene to fix the damages.

No injuries were reported. The 900 block of West Sylvania Avenue was closed for approximately three hours while crews responded to the scene.
