2 people killed in violent Gibsonburg crash Sunday night

Ohio State Highway Patrol officials told WTOL 11 the driver lost control of his car and went off the road before hitting a tree.

GIBSONBURG, Ohio — Two people are dead after a violent crash late Sunday night in Sandusky County.

The incident happened just before 10:30 p.m. in the area of West Stevenson and North Patterson Street in Gibsonburg.

Ohio State Highway Patrol officials told WTOL 11 the driver of a Jeep Wrangler, Andrew Widmer, of Gibsonburg, lost control of his car and went off the road before hitting a tree.

Both he [Widmer] and his passenger, Emilio Chavez, were ejected from the vehicle. Chavez was not wearing a seatbelt, according to a press release from OSHP.

"He [Widmer] lost control of his vehicle and traveled off of the side of the roadway, struck a tree, and ejected both passengers out of the vehicle. Both of them [Widmer and Chavez] did pass away," said Sgt. Bolduan with the OSHP.

The families of those who died in the crash were notified by police.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
