ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The University of Michigan is moving forward with its plans to apply for liquor licenses that could allow for the sale of alcohol at Crisler Center, Michigan Stadium and Yost Ice Arena as soon as Jan. 1, 2024.
The Board of Regents voted on Oct. 19 to authorize asking the Michigan Liquor Control Commission to give the three athletic venues liquor licenses. They also voted to implement licenses for Crisler Center and Yost Ice Arena as soon as possible to have them for the current seasons.
Implementation of the licenses for Michigan Stadium will be voted on at a later date after a review of the data and experiences at the other two venues once the licenses are in place.
If approved by the state, alcohol could be purchased at all three venues during sporting events as well as during a small number of non-athletic events per calendar year.
The athletic department would need to develop procedures to ensure the sale of alcohol in the facilities is compliant with the state of Michigan laws, Liquor Control Commission rules and regulations and that all alcohol-related university policies are adhered to.
These decisions come following a bill Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed in July lifting Michigan's ban on alcohol sales at public university stadiums and sports arenas.
University officials are still deciding how revenue from the sale of alcohol would be used if the licenses are approved.
