Walbridge Elementary School provides families with Thanksgiving food

Families who live near the school came to pick up fixings for a full Thanksgiving meal. Bowsher High School athletes helped pass out food baskets.

TOLEDO, Ohio — Delores Moore lives in south Toledo with her three kids, two of whom go to Walbridge Elementary School.

For the past few years, Moore said her family has received a Thanksgiving basket full of food, including a turkey. It's all provided free of charge by the school.

"We always get a basket," said Moore. "It's helpful. Just in these times right now, how tough it is for everybody."

Assistant Principal Lynn Worthy said she sees the need, especially with high food costs.

"We have double the number of students coming to breakfast every morning," Worthy said. "With the cost the food, our families are really struggling so we wanted to feed more people."

Worthy has been organizing the event for three years and said the impact on the community shows.

"A lot of people told us they wouldn't have a Thanksgiving meal if we didn't give them this basket so we're very grateful," she said.

Bowsher High School athletes came to help hand out the baskets, even taking them to people's cars.

Codie Thames, a basketball player, hopes to continue volunteering once he graduates.

"I was glad to do it," he said. "To help out the community. Always love giving back."

This year, Worthy said the event was able to feed between 80-100 families, topping previous years. But she wants to feed more.

"We would love to feed the whole school if we could, that's our goal, but right now we were really happy we could feed so many people," she said.

Many of the people who received food, and even clothing, told the school how grateful they were. Moore said she already has big plans with the food she received.

"You already know I'm fixing a big feast for the family," she said.

School officials said the event is possible thanks to donations from people in the district and in the community. They also plan to donate any of the leftover food to a nearby shelter.
