TOLEDO, Ohio — The Warrior Within program at Owens Community College helps veterans comfortably transition into being students after military service.
"I think it's a really cool way to kind of have a serious discussion and we can learn something about each other's experiences but is not too formal," said Bradley Green, a Veterans Affairs Work Study employee.
For Green, it's about being around veterans; he served himself and shares unique experiences with the veterans he works with.
"I'm not alone on specific veteran-student topics, which is nice to know," Green said. "It is nice to know your problems aren't just yours. They're just shared experiences."
The Warrior Within program is a group discussion series that meets every other Wednesday. It is funded through the U.S. Secretary of Education.
"We wanted to bring veterans together to understand that the issues they are going through while they can feel like they are going through them alone, they are not unique, and other veterans have gone through those transitions," said Jason Graven, assistant director of the Trio Veterans Upward Bound Program.
The program assists veterans who are first-generation college students and non-traditional students.
"We wanted to bring veterans together to understand that the issues they are going through while they can feel like they are going through them alone, they are not unique and other veterans have gone through those transitions,"
The Warrior Within program meets every other Wednesday at Owens Community College and the Toledo Veterans Affairs on South Detroit Avenue.
