Washington Local Schools to vote Wednesday on temporary lay-off of 57 employees

The school's cafeterias and libraries will also be closed to start the year.

TOLEDO, Ohio — In an unprecedented move, Washington Local School officials say the board of education will vote Wednesday on the temporary lay-off of 57 employees due to changes having to be made due to the coronavirus.

The school says that cafeterias and libraries will also be closed to start the year in order to avoid large gatherings in small spaces.

Breakfast and lunch will still be available daily in a grab-and-go style as there will be no cooking at the school.

Students will also not be moving into spaces that were occupied by other students without cleaning.

The school says the safety of students and staff is the top priority. Every 30 days, officials will revisit these decisions and monitor the coronavirus situation in the community.

"Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, we find ourselves in a very challenging situation," the school said in a statement. "Next fall, there is still so much that is unclear about our return to school. The governor had indicated he will give us some guidelines int he next ten days. We have been planning, along with other districts across Ohio, for many different scenarios."
