TOLEDO, Ohio — Multiple businesses in a strip mall in Sylvania Township were affected by a fire Saturday night, a battalion chief for the township's fire department told WTOL 11.
While some will remain closed for the foreseeable future due to smoke damage, at least one business - Adamas Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy - plans to reopen on Monday.
Crews from the township, the city of Sylvania and Toledo responded to the fire at 5201 Monroe Street around 6:30 p.m.
No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
Lt. Craig Koperski, the battalion chief, said the fire started on the right, or north, side of the strip mall. A spa and a neighboring vacant unit were damaged by the fire, which extended through the roof.
At least six businesses were affected by the fire and there is smoke damage throughout the entire building, Koperski said. Representatives from Leroy's and Margaret's, a bar/restaurant in the strip mall, said their business will close for a couple weeks because of smoke damage and they will await approval from the health department to reopen.
"At first we actually thought our building was on fire, maybe the cooks had burnt something. But they said they didn't and it was the building behind us," said Mariam Musa, who works at a restaurant just north of the strip mall. "So we went outside and all we see is a fire, fire just going up."
