Roads open after large oil spill prompts closure in Springfield Township

The Springfield Township Fire Department said 275 gallons of oil was spilled in the lanes of Westbound Airport Highway at McCord Road.

SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP, Ohio — UPDATE: As of Thursday just before 3 a.m., the roadway was re-opened to traffic, according to a social media post by the Ohio Department of Transportation.

Original story below:

Airport Highway at South McCord Road in Springfield Township is shut down due to a hazmat incident Wednesday afternoon.

The Springfield Township Fire Department said westbound Airport Highway is closed at the intersection as crews work to clear the area after 275 gallons of oil spilled in the roadway around 1:15 p.m.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol said a Freightliner transporting used motor oil was traveling on Airport Highway when the load became unsecured, causing the oil to spill into the roadway. OSHP said the driver was cited.

The fire department said that "cleanup is going to be very extended."

An EPA crew was also coming to the scene, OSHP said.
