EDGERTON, Ohio — A 17-year-old from Edgerton was killed in a crash early Sunday morning in Michigan and a 16-year-old was severely injured, according to the Michigan State Police.
The crash happened around 1:30 a.m. on North Main Street in Camden, Michigan in western Hillsdale County near the border with Indiana and Ohio.
Edgerton Superintendent Ben Wilhelm confirmed the name of the teenager as junior Levi Hess, who played football, baseball and wrestled for the school.
Hess was a junior firefighter with the Edgerton Fire Department. According to Edgerton Fire Chief Scott Blue, Hess had joined the program as a sophomore.
According to MSP, Hess was driving a pickup truck with a 16-year-old passenger when he lost control of his vehicle.
Troopers say the truck went off the road where it struck two parked vehicles in a driveway.
Hess was taken to the hospital in Hillsdale where he was pronounced dead. The passenger was flown to a hospital in Ann Arbor with severe but non-life-threatening injuries. MSP did not release their identity.
Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call the Michigan State Police at 517-780-4580.
The school released a statement on Sunday about the crash:
It is with profound sadness that we learned the tragic news of the passing of Levi Hess, a student at Edgerton High School, who lost his life in an automobile accident over the weekend.
His loss is deeply felt across our school community, and our thoughts and heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, and all who knew him.
In response to this heartbreaking event, trained support staff will be available in the school building for students who wish to speak with a counselor. We encourage anyone in need of support to reach out and take advantage of these resources.
We understand that this is a difficult time for our entire school community, and we are committed to providing the necessary support to help one another through this period of grief.
