TOLEDO, Ohio — A 54-year-old woman died in south Toledo Monday after a tree fell on her as severe thunderstorms passed through the area.
The woman, identified Tuesday by Toledo police as Sherri Long, was crushed by a falling tree on Beverly Drive near Copland Boulevard. A strong line of thunderstorms moved through the area between 6 and 6:30 p.m.
Fire Chief Allison Armstrong confirmed the woman's death Monday night at the scene. She said 911 calls started coming in at about 6:25 p.m.
A neighbor found the woman outside.
"Always pay attention to the weather," Armstrong said. "Weather can come fast, winds can come fast, so you always just want to pay attention to your surroundings and try to be in a safe place if you can.”
Long's daughter is a student at Toledo Public Schools. The district sent the following message to families Tuesday:
"Toledo Public Schools is asking the community to keep the family of Sherri Long in their thoughts and prayers as they cope with her untimely passing. Ms. Long's daughter attends Bowsher High School and today counselors were available to help any student or staff member who was having difficulty dealing with this sudden loss. The school's administration has also reached out to the family and will provide any support they can during this difficult time."
Also Monday, a 14-year-old girl was electrocuted and died in Monroe, Mich., after touching downed electrical lines.
This is a developing story.
