Woodward student struck by truck while crossing street near high school

Tong Akol, 17, has been sedated ever since the accident and part of his skull had to be removed due to the accident, according to his aunt.

TOLEDO, Ohio — A Woodward High School student was struck by a vehicle Tuesday around 9 a.m.

Toledo police said a white pickup truck hit Tong Akol, 17, while he was crossing East Central Avenue after getting off a TARTA bus near the school. He was transported to the hospital with severe injuries.

According to TPD, the driver was cooperating with investigators on the scene. No charges are known to have been filed against the driver of the pickup truck.

According to a GoFundMe set up by Tong's aunt, Donna York, he was struck by the truck five days before his birthday. He has been sedated ever since the accident and part of his skull had to be removed due to the accident.

"(Tong's) single mother and sister are desperately in need of support from their community, school, and extended family. Please give what you can," the GoFundMe reads.
