World Dragon Slaying Day comes to Temperance

Over 100 archers brought their bows and arrows to Tomahawk Archers Sunday to slay dragons over a target course. The motto: impacting the world one arrow at a time.

TEMPERANCE, Mich. — You may not know who Dennis Kauth is but you probably played or heard of the Dungeons and Dragons game.

Kauth was one of it's original artists and father of Wyatt McElroy.

"He was really tall and really chubby," Wyatt said.

Kauth, who died in 2013, loved archery.

That's why 150 archers brought their bows and arrows to Tomahawk Archers Sunday to slay dragons over a thirty target course.

"I find it very peaceful. Just kind of zone in, focus and let the arrows fly," archer Shelly Reid said.

Money raised will benefit Dylan Sweets, a thirteen year-old local boy battling a rare form of cancer.

"I like archery a lot and I like the mission of today. I like the idea of helping somebody," Janine Capsouras said.

The archery shoot is happening because of the love Wyatt has for his dad.

He said he believes everyone has a dragon to slay in life be it drugs, alcohol, depression or something else.

For Wyatt, it was overcoming the grief of his dad's death at such a young age.

"It just calms me down. And it keeps me focused on the bow and arrow and the target," he said.

To date, World Dragon Slaying day is in 38 states and 65 countries. At every location, a person or organization benefits.

"We feel it's important, it's community helping community. I feel we need more of that right now and archery is a huge way of doing that," Wyatt's mom, Dorothy, said.

Whether you're an archer or not, Wyatt McElroy wants us to believe in the expression on the back of his t-shirt: Dream Big. Shoot Straight. Aim Small.
