TOLEDO, Ohio — Toledo Grows, Toledo School for the Arts and Boys & Girls Clubs of Toledo have been awarded grants from the TEGNA Foundation.

The foundation supports local charities with grants each year. This year's recipients received their grants at an event at WTOL 11 Wednesday.

"One of the best feelings in the world is giving! It's an honor and a blessing to be able to support these amazing charities with the help of the TEGNA Foundation!" said WTOL 11 General Manager Brian Lorenzen.  "We are guided by the principles to find ways to support and make our community better, and we are better when we are #11together."

Toledo Grows plans to use the grant money for seeds that it grows into seedlings for local community gardens.

Executive Director Yvonne Dubielak said the annual project allows the non-profit to start seeds early in the year that then become strong seedlings offered at no cost to neighborhood gardening projects.

"It provides plants, really great hardy plants, for community gardens," Dubielak said.

Toledo School for the Arts, which recently completed a $10 million expansion at its Uptown campus, plans to use the grant money for its new flexible-space studio, said Director Rob Koenig.

"This money is going to go right into equipment for our black box studio," Koenig said.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Toledo, which also received a TEGNA Foundation grant in 2022, will use the grant to help provide funding to a variety of after-school programs and to the local facility in Toledo.  Boys and Girls Club combines and trained club staff to create a safe place for the kids they serve.

"During these extraordinary times, our stations' fundraising and grantmaking efforts demonstrate our commitment to empowering local communities to build a better and more equitable future," said Dave Lougee, President, and CEO, TEGNA. "We are proud to support all of our local partners and thank them for the inspiring work they are doing to serve the greater good."

The TEGNA Foundation is a corporate foundation sponsored by TEGNA Inc, WTOL 11's parent company. Through its Community Grant Program, TEGNA Foundation serves the greater good of our communities by supporting nonprofit activities where TEGNA does business. Through its other programs, the Foundation invests in the future of the media industry, encourages employee giving, and contributes to a variety of charitable causes.
