TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) - Lucas County employees came together to eat sweet treats on Friday for a good cause.
The treasurer's office held a bake sale and silent auction for Laila Rivers, an incoming freshman at Whitmer, who was just diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in June.
Laila, a very active 13-year-old, has dreams of becoming a physical therapist and loves playing basketball.
It was during one of her games that her mom noticed she was sluggish and then took her to the hospital, where she got the diagnosis.
River's father, Lamont, works as a deputy treasurer in the office.
After watching their family take countless trips to the hospital, his co-workers came together to make the desserts and donate items.
One hundred percent of the proceeds will go toward her medical costs.
"She's been comforting those who come to check her out. She is an inspiration to me, because she is so strong and she has cried only maybe twice. She keeps me going every day, so I have to fight, just like she fights," Lamont Rivers said.
Rivers says he is thankful for the compassion of his co-workers.
The event lasted from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on the fifth floor of One Government Center.
Laila turns 14 in a little more than a week.
