TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - On Friday, the organization Mom's House held its 22nd annual Mom's Night Out Gala, where a “Mom of the Year” is honored. This year, the spotlight is on Toledo Mayor Paula Hicks-Hudson.

Mom's House helps to support young, low-income single parents who are pursuing education. It assists them with parenting classes, mentoring, tutoring and counseling.

After the mayor's recent visit to the house, Mom's House directors say they saw Mayor Hicks-Hudson in a different light.

“She's a great role model. She came out to the house to visit and the moms and all the kids were having such a great time,” said Mom's House Executive Director Christina Rodriguez. “She got on the floor with the kids and just had fun. But also at the same time, the young ladies were so impressed because she was so

real with them and was taking selfies with them and just having them feel like they were important. And that meant the world to them.”

Rodriguez added that Mayor Hicks-Hudson's resilience, perseverance and value system helped her shine as this year's winning mom.

The gala was Friday, May 15 at The Pinnacle in Maumee at 7 p.m. For more information, visit the Mom's House
