TOLEDO -- Lucas County Juvenile Court has closed its Youth Treatment Center after black mold was found on the wall of the building's third floor. Thirty-four youths who were living at the center were moved to other centers around northwest Ohio.
The building, located in the 200th block of 11th Street, will stay closed while the county works to develop a plan to deal with the mold, and make long-term repairs to make sure it doesn't return. The county expects that to take three weeks.
"I was very impressed with the way our staff at the Youth Treatment Center and at the Juvenile Detention Center worked quickly and cooperatively to ensure the safety of our residents moving from the facility to various secured centers throughout Northwest Ohio," said Juvenile Court Administrative Judge Denise Cubbon in a prepared statement.
Some of the residents were relocated to two gender-separate wings of the Lucas County Juvenile Detention Center. Youth Treatment Center employees are there caring for them.
