MONROE, MI (WTOL) - The Monroe community is in shock over findings on the cause of Nevaeh Buchanan's death.
The Wayne County Medical Examiner believes the little girl died from inhaling dirt. They are not sure if she was buried alive or if someone pushed her face into the earth.
To this day mourners continue to visit the place where her body was found along the River Raisin. Now news that she may have been buried alive along its banks, have relatives calling for justice.
"The only kind of comfort would be the conviction, and this person being put to death," says Shawn Lawson, Nevaeh's 2nd cousin.
But no one seems to know who committed the crime, and when they will be brought to justice.
"We have to just be patient," explains Lawson. "It's hard to be patient because of what's going on."
Investigators at the Monroe County Sheriff's Office say the search for answers is still underway.
The Nevaeh Buchanan Abduction Task Force has followed more than 1,200 tips. Neighbors say some of the tips have been leading them back to door 63 at the Charlotte Arms Apartments, where her mother Jennifer Buchanan lives.
Neighbors say investigators were seen a few days ago taking pieces of carpet from the family's apartment and that of a neighbor who lives on the 2nd floor.
"I guess they found carpet fibers on her body or under her nails," says Lawson.
And while George Kennedy and Roy LeeSmith remain persons of interest, investigators say they are still looking at everyone connected to Nevaeh and the day she went missing.
