Mugshots bar will close in light of shooting

Two men faced charges in court Tuesday after being accused of shooting outside of Mugshots bar in north Toledo late Sunday night. The shooting may have been the tipping point for the bar's closing.

TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) – Two men faced charges in court Tuesday after being accused of shooting outside of Mugshots bar in north Toledo late Sunday night. The shooting may have been the tipping point for the bar's closing.

Brothers Rhaymoun and Richard Villolovos both requested public defenders in court. They are both charged with felonious assault.

Police said they were kicked out of Mugshots bar after a fight broke out and then started shooting, leaving six people injured.

Bond was set at $25,000 each with no 10 percent.

A court order issued Tuesday afternoon closed the doors to Mugshots.

According to a statement Tuesday from Mugshots' owner Hellal Joseph, "Mugshots is now closed and will not open at this location. Sorry for the incidence (sic) that occurred this weekend OUTSIDE my establishment."

That is not stopping the city of Toledo from pursuing legal action to close the bar for good. The city has been granted a temporary restraining order from municipal court, which makes it official.

Last year the city objected to the bar's liquor license being renewed, but Mugshots was still allowed to stay open.

"Often times when the city objects to the renewal of a liquor license, the Liquor Control Commission overrides the city," explained Terry Glazer.

The Ohio Liquor Control Commission will review Mugshots' license issue in March.

Neighbors are relieved after they said in recent years there have been ongoing safety concerns. Toledo Police reports have received more than 200 complaints called in over the past two years.

While neighbors do not want to see another business closing, they understand it might be the only option left to get peace of mind.

"I think that would be a great idea and safer environment for the neighborhood people to live over here in the north end," said Darlene Bonds. "Nothing but problems for the last two years that I've been over here."

Not everyone blames the bar's violence on the owner.

"It's nerve wracking to us as residents, but they can't control what people do outside of their establishment," said Tracey Simmons.

Simmons points the blame at those who pulled the trigger.

"It's the actions of the people and how they control their liquor," said Simmons.

At least one neighbor said he has had enough.

"Just not a good neighborhood. I'm moving Saturday. I don't like the neighborhood at all," said Rick Fryer.
