Adrian Dominican Sisters offer prayers for peace amid Israel-Hamas conflict

The Adrian Dominican Sisters, along with people from Siena Heights University, sent hope and support to those in the Gaza Strip and Israel affected by the violence.

ADRIAN, Mich. — Community members in Adrian, Mich., took a moment to pray Thursday for a peaceful resolution to the conflict between Israel and Hamas.

The Adrian Dominican Sisters, along with people from Siena Heights University, sent hope and support to those in the Gaza Strip and Israel affected by the violence, which has seen major recent attacks on both sides that have resulted in hundreds of civilian deaths.

"This was a special occasion that called us together around the focus of peace in the holy lands," Adrian Dominican Sisters Prioress Elise Garcia said.

Garcia said times of war are important moments for religious congregations to like the Adrian Dominican Sisters to send hope and offer support.

"Anytime there is the kind of war and division and conflict that exists in the world right now, such stark terms in the Middle East, it calls upon all of us people to faith to prayer," she said.

Siena Heights University President Douglas Palmer said the busy university community, including students, faculty and administration, took the time to show its support as well.

He said the university can analyze and discuss the conflict in the classroom, but strength comes from everyone standing together.

"I think anytime we can call a pause and reflect in prayer, I think that has power," Palmer said.

On Oct. 7, Hamas launched a surprise attack on the Gaza Strip in Israel and took people hostage.

According to CBS, over 2,700 people have died and nearly 10,000 people have been injured.

The Adrian Dominican Sisters say prayer is what's keeping them positive.

"We certainly will continue to hold that sense of hope for a peaceful outcome," Garcia said.
