WASHINGTON — Actor Kenneth Mitchell, known for his roles in "Star Trek: Discovery," died from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, known as ALS. He was 49.
His family confirmed the actor's death on Sunday in a statement shared on X, formerly known as Twitter.
"With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Kenneth Alexander Mitchell, beloved father, husband, brother, uncle, son and dear friend," the statement read. "For five and a half years, Ken faced a series of awful challenges from ALS. And in truest Ken fashion, he managed to rise above each one with grace and commitment, to living a full and joyous life in each moment."
Mitchell had been diagnosed with ALS in 2018 and began using a wheelchair the following year. He publicly shared his diagnosis with PEOPLE in 2020.
ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a neurological disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, according to Mayo Clinic. The disease is known to cause loss of muscle control and typically gets worse over time. There is no known cure for ALS.
"Ken is forever grateful for the massive amounts of love and endless support he received from his community along this journey. Especially the courage, resilience, and strength displayed from his extraordinary wife, family, and friends," the statement read.
Mitchell, born on Nov. 25, 1974, in Toronto, Canada, appeared on several films and television shows. On "Star Trek: Discovery," the actor portrayed the roles of Klingons Kol, Kol-Sha, and Tenavik, as well as Aurellio. Additionally, the actor voiced several characters in an episode of "Star Trek: Lower Decks."
Outside of the "Star Trek" world, Mitchell played Carol Danvers' father in "Captain Marvel" and an Olympic hopeful in "Miracle."
The 49-year-old actor is survived by his wife Susan May Pratt and their two children, Lilah and Kallum. Mitchell requested that any gifts be directed towards ALS research or in support of his children.
