Participants receive free health screenings and more at first Go Red Por Tu Corazon luncheon

TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) - One in three women have cardiovascular disease but you can do something about it right now.

WTOL 11's Viviana Hurtado emceed the first Go Red Por Tu Corazon luncheon right before Hispanic Heritage Month. This is part of WTOL 11's #11Together community commitment in partnership with the the Toledo chapter of the American Heart Association.

The goal of Go Red is to give women the knowledge and resources to lead a hearty healthy life, especially in minority communities. Latina women and their health were highlighted in Thursday's luncheon.

"We're very family oriented, so we wanted them to know, you know, how to recognize symptoms, how you need to take care of yourself, how it's important that you put yourself first so you can take care of others," said Sue Cuevas, the Go Red event chair.

More than 100 women gathered at the Sofia Quintero Arts and Culture Center in south Toledo.

Everyone who attended received free health screenings for things like blood pressure, cooking demos to prepare healthy meals and were fed a delicious heart-healthy lunch.
