WWBT out of Richmond Virginia reports the parent company of cigarette maker Philip Morris is raising the cost of cigarettes Monday, March 9. Altria Group Inc. will raise prices on Marlboro and 17 other brands ahead of the new federal tobacco tax in April.
Marlboro, Parliament, Virginia Slims amongst other varieties will cost 71 cents more per pack.
Bensen & Hedges and eight other brands will cost 81 cents more per pack.
The federal tax of 62 cents will take effect in April.
Phillip Morris USA cigarette brands include Marlboro, Alpine, Basic, Benson & Hedges, Bristol, Cambridge, Chesterfield, Commander, Dave's, English Ovals, Lark, L&M, Merit, Parliament, Players, Saratoga and Virginia Slims.
