Bowling Green voters approve levy to build new high school

Bowling Green voters faced a ballot measure for school construction for a fifth time.

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio — Bowling Green voters on Tuesday approved a levy to build a new high school, according to unofficial results from the Wood County Board of Elections.

With 100% of precincts reporting, results show 6,296 voters cast ballots in favor of the issue, while 4,451 voters cast ballots against it.

The 5.53-mill property tax levy will raise $73 million for the new school -- something the district has been trying to do for years. Voters rejected four previous construction levy requests in 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2022.

The measure would cost the owner of a $100,000 home $193 a year.

Supporters of the levy called it necessary to provide a more modern building for students, while opponents said the financial burden on taxpayers would be too high.

Bowling Green's current high school, built in 1963, is outdated and has structural issues and a cockroach problem, district officials have said. In October the district hosted tours for the public to tour the high school and see its condition for themselves.
