Lucas County voters talk about what brought them to the polls

Early voters in Lucas County told WTOL 11 that Issue 1 was the main driver that brought them to the polls on Sunday.

TOLEDO, Ohio — Early voting ended on Sunday for Ohio's November election. WTOL 11 spoke to early voters outside the Lucas County Board of Elections on Sylvania Ave. many of whom said Issue 1 was a big driver for them to cast their vote.

"Honeslty the only thing that brought me out was Issue 1," said Caryssa Burzynski. "I just feel like it should be our own decision what we do with our bodies, and I don't feel like anybody should tell me yes or no."

Sarah Porter and Liam Armstrong waited in line for about 45 minutes so their voices could be heard.

"As a future healthcare provider I don't want to have to be dealing with all those legal issues and have to have the law come in and say 'Okay, was this person really in septic shock? What were their vitals?' and then be questioned on the stand about it. That's horrifying to me. The law has no place in a patient's room," said Porter.

"You can get into the deep philosophical question of 'Is this a person? or 'is it not?' But I think that's for the individual to choose and not for the state to get involved with at all," said Armstrong.

According to a Baldwin Wallace University Ohio Pulse Poll, 58% of likely voters for this election are in favor Issue 1, an issue that is favored by nearly 90% Democrats, nearly 40% Republicans, and just over 50% of Independents.

"I don't know how we ended up getting here to begin with but that's why I'm just happy to see all the heards of people that did show support and come out," said Burzynski. "Whether they're voting to or for, I'm just happy all these people are here showing support either way."

If you didn't get a chance to vote early, polls open at 6:30 a.m. on election day Tuesday November 7 and will stay open until 7:30 p.m.
