TECUMSEH, Mich. — Editor's note: The attached video is a preview of the issue from before election night.
In a significant win for the local education system, voters have approved the Tecumseh Public Schools’ sinking fund millage. Unofficial results show the levy passing with 5,560 votes in favor and 4,922 votes against.
The levy, set at 1.75 mills, is designed to generate approximately $7.5 million over the next five years, providing about $1.5 million annually. These funds will be used for essential building repairs and capital projects within the district, ensuring a safe and effective learning environment for students and staff.
"Today we celebrate our community's dedication to creating a brighter future for Tecumseh Public Schools," said district superintendent Matt Hilton. "This support for our sinking fund allows us to tackle much-needed repairs and upgrades that will benefit our students, staff, and community for years. We are honored and grateful for your trust in us to carry this work forward."
Tecumseh Schools Board of Education President Tony Rebottaro also thanked voters in a statement Wednesday.
"On behalf of the Tecumseh Public Schools Board of Education, I wish to thank the citizens of our community for their support in approving the Sinking Fund for our schools. This board is committed to being good stewards of your money and pledge to use it to make Tecumseh Public Schools the best school district in the region.
We also wish to thank Mr. Hilton and his staff for their tireless efforts in educating the community on this issue. His hard work and dedication were instrumental in the passing of this funding."
The first project funded by this levy will be the repair of the Tecumseh Memorial Community Pool roof, estimated to cost about $2.5 million. Other critical projects include repaving driveways, roof repairs, technology updates, and more. The sinking fund allows the district to pay for these projects without incurring debt, ensuring financial responsibility and sustainability.
With the passage of the levy, the district can now move forward with its plans to maintain and enhance its facilities, providing a better environment for both students and staff. This outcome also helps to stabilize the district’s budget, providing a sustainable source of revenue for the foreseeable future.
The official results will be confirmed after the official canvass takes place.
