TOLEDO, Ohio — Editor's note: The attached video is from a preview of the issue from before election night.
In a decisive move to support the county’s senior citizens, voters have approved Issue 29, the Lucas County Senior Citizens Services Levy. The measure received strong backing from the community, with unofficial results showing 86,013 votes in favor and 76,133 votes against.
The passage of the levy means that the existing 0.75 mills levy will be renewed and increased by 0.25 mills, bringing the total rate to 1.0 mill per $1 of taxable value. This will generate approximately $8.14 million annually, ensuring continued and enhanced services for senior citizens across Lucas County.
The levy will cost property owners an estimated $30 per $100,000 of assessed property value and will be in effect for five years, starting in 2024 and first due in 2025. This marks a significant investment in the well-being of the county’s aging population.
Community members and advocates for senior services have expressed their relief and gratitude for the levy’s approval.
While the results are unofficial and unconfirmed until the official canvass takes place, the approval of Issue 29 is a promising step forward for Lucas County. The funds will be allocated to various programs and services that directly benefit senior citizens, including home-delivered meals, transportation and in-home care services.
