Some voters received wrong ballots ahead of Election Day, Lucas County BOE says

The error only affects the contested race for Toledo City Council District 1 between incumbent John Hobbs III and candidate Shaun Strong, the board said.

LUCAS COUNTY, Ohio — Sixty-one voters in Lucas County received incorrect ballots for Tuesday's general election, according to the Lucas County Board of Elections.

The board said there was a "data input error within one of its precincts that resulted in a limited number of voters receiving a District 2 ballot instead of the correct District 1 ballot."

The error only affects the contested race for Toledo City Council District 1 between incumbent John Hobbs III and candidate Shaun Strong, the board said. The District 2 race is uncontested.

"The initial error did not affect the outcome of any election results within District 2, and regardless the votes in error will not be counted," the board said.

The board said the issue was detected and rectified on the evening of Nov. 3, but acknowledged that some voters had already submitted absentee ballots or voted early.

The households affected by the error were given supplemental ballots that applied to the appropriate District 1 race by bipartisan outreach teams, the board said.

Voters who were not at home when Board of Elections representatives visited were left with an attached notice and given until 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, when polls close, to return the completed supplemental ballot to their polling location. Voters can also return the ballots to the dropbox or office of the Lucas County BOE at 3737 W. Sylvania Ave.

"The Lucas County Board of Elections takes this matter seriously and is dedicated to maintaining the integrity and transparency of the electoral process. Measures have been put in place to prevent such occurrences in the future. The Board is grateful for the understanding and participation of the community as it works to safeguard the democratic process."
