What you need to know about Michigan's primary elections

Michigan votes in the presidential primary on Feb. 27. The state primary, which will see a U.S. Senate seat up for grabs, will occur on Aug. 6.

MICHIGAN, USA — With a presidential election, local elections and potential special elections this year, Michigan voters will be making multiple trips to the polls in 2024.

Here are some dates to mark on your calendar for election days in 2024.

Michigan election dates for 2024

Michigan voters will cast ballots in three statewide elections in 2024: 

  • Feb. 27 Presidential Primary
  • Aug. 6 State Primary
  • Nov. 5. General Election 

Also this year, some Michigan voters may have special elections and local elections on May 7. It has not yet been determined which counties will have elections on this day 

Michigan's senate race 2024

The race to fill the open Senate seat held for two decades by Democrat Debbie Stabenow, who announced last year she will not seek re-election, will be front and center in the August primary. The list of candidates includes five Democrats and 12 Republicans:

Democrats:

  • U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin
  • former state Rep. Leslie Love
  • Hill Harper
  • Zack Burns
  • Nasser Beydoun

Republicans:

  • former U.S. Rep. and state Sen. Mike Rogers
  • former U.S. Rep. and Peter Meijer
  • state Board of Education member Nikki Snyder
  • former Detroit police chief James Craig
  • Sherry O'Connell
  • Sandy Pensler
  • Bensson Samuel
  • Sharon Savage
  • Michael Hoover
  • J.D. Wilson
  • Alexandria Taylor
  • Glenn Wilson

When does voting begin?

Presidential primary

All absentee voting for the presidential primary has been available since Jan. 18.

Jan. 28: Communities may begin to allow early voting (for more information on early voting in Michigan, click here)

Feb. 12: Deadline to register by mail or online

Feb. 17: Mandatory date for all communities to begin early voting

Feb. 23: Deadline to request an absentee ballot online or by mail

Feb. 25: Last day of early voting

Feb. 26: Deadline of 4 p.m. to request an absentee ballot in person at local clerk's office

Feb. 27: Polls are open for the presidential primary election from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Voters can still request absentee ballots in person at local clerk's office, but only if registering to vote or updating their voter registration address

March 4: Deadline for military and overseas absentee ballots submitted and postmarked on or before Election Day to be received and counted

State primary

June 22: Military and overseas absentee voting begins

July 7: Communities may begin to allow early voting (for more information on early voting in Michigan, click here)

July 22: Deadline to register by mail or online

July 23: In-person registration at local clerk's office begins

July 27: Mandatory date for all communities to begin early voting

Aug. 2: Deadline to request an absentee ballot online or by mail

Aug. 4: Last day of early voting

Aug. 5: Deadline of 4 p.m. to request an absentee ballot in person at local clerk's office

Aug. 6: Polls are open for the presidential primary election from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Voters can still request absentee ballots in person at local clerk's office, but only if registering to vote or updating their voter registration address
