TOLEDO, Ohio — Voters on Tuesday nominated Derek Merrin to face incumbent Democrat Marcy Kaptur for Ohio's 9th Congressional District in November, according to unofficial election results.
Merrin, who is currently in his fourth term as state representative for Ohio's 42nd District, beat Craig Riedel and Steve Lankenau for the nomination.
Kaptur, the longest-serving woman in Congress, will present a challenge for Merrin as she seeks her 22nd term. Republican-drawn Congressional district maps approved in 2022 made Kaptur's seat a target for the GOP.
The Republican candidate pool was narrowed to three when J.R. Majewski, who previously tried and failed to beat Kaptur in the 2022 general election, suspended his 2024 campaign after disparaging Special Olympics athletes.
Riedel previously served three terms as the state representative for Ohio's 82nd District from 2017 to 2022.
While Lankenau has also held office, serving three mayoral terms in Napoleon, he does not consider himself to be a career politician.
