Did the Ottawa Hills Local Schools levy pass?

The levy, which district officials initially planned to put to voters last year, will generate $2.343 million a year in revenue for Ottawa Hills Local Schools.

OTTAWA HILLS, Ohio — Editor's note: The above video originally aired March 5.

Ottawa Hills school district voters have approved a new 12.9-mill property tax levy, according to unofficial election results.

The levy, which district officials initially planned to put to voters last year, will generate $2.343 million a year in revenue for Ottawa Hills.

The new levy will cost property owners $452 for every $100,000 in property valuation. Collection will begin in 2025.

The district had attempted to get the levy on the ballot for the November 2023 election, but had to drop those plans. An error in the ballot language submitted by the now-former district treasurer prevented the levy from appearing on the November ballot. The treasurer submitted ballot language that mistakenly said the levy would cost property owners less than the levy would actually cost.

Lucas County elections officials discovered the error, but it was too late for the district to resubmit new ballot language. The district challenged the ruling but lost its argument with both the Lucas County Board of Elections and the Ohio Supreme Court.

The delay forced school officials to make budget cuts.
